Tonight I abandoned the campaign trail to do some volunteer work for the United Way. The Harlem Ambassadors, a show performing basketball team came to town to do a benefit game against a hometown team. Our team was made up of the Eunice Police Department and the Eunice Marshall's Office. The event was all in fun, and thank goodness our Team United was good humored and didn't mind being humiliated! As a volunteer, I was thankful for the opportunity to see these guys and gals perform and then inspire the crowd by their winning stories of strength and perseverance. If you work hard and believe in yourself, nothing is impossible.
While the Harlem Ambassadors were here during the week, they were able to council and minister to prisoners in the OPD jail, juvenile offenders from Judge Venessa Harris' office, the kids at Hope for Opelousas and Opelousas Boys and Girls Club. Tomorrow they will go to Ville Platte to speak to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders with a positive message about education, making right choices and not bullying. It is my belief that when you volunteer your time to a worthy cause, you get more out of the experience than do the recipients of your deeds.
Tomorrow I return to the trail.
